Space Hardened Level shifter IC Award
Enables use of lower voltages in space

SAN DIEGO, CA –Sept 28, 2004 – Space Micro Inc. has been selected for research and development of a new radiation hardened chip to enable more use of commercial microelectronics in space. This effort is being partially supported by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) under a Phase I SBIR contract. This work will culminate with the availability of a radiation hardened microelectronics chip, which interfaces between legacy 5 volt logic and the increasing lower voltages used commercially. This device must be hardened to both the total ionizing dose and the single event effects in space orbits.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to partner with AFRL to bring this chip into the solution set for satellite designers, said David J. Strobel, President of Space Micro. “We believe this program is an important step in using the lower voltage and power commercial memory and processors in the worldwide satellite industry.”

The level shifter IC will incorporate Space Micro’s Hardened by design (HBD) IC design technologies. This new chip will employ unique IC design and layout techniques and be fabricated at a commercial semiconductor foundry. Combining these technologies into space qualified standard products will allow the use of advanced lower voltage commercial ICs in the harsh environment encountered in space.
