Space Radiation Dosimeter feasibility demonstrated

Monitors radiation levels in spacecraft electronics

SAN DIEGO, CA –July 15, 2005 – Space Micro Inc. has demonstrated technical feasibility of a new low cost space radiation dosimeter. This effort is being partially supported by NASA under a Phase I STTR contract. In Phase I, the prototype hardware was designed, fabricated, and tested in a space radiation environment.

This R&D will culminate with the development and availability of a commercially available, small footprint 3U cPCI, low power dosimeter which monitors and reports on the total ionizing dose observed in a spacecraft. The standard dosimeter card, called MicroRad100, is also radiation tolerant to both the total ionizing dose and the single event effects in space orbits.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to partner with NASA to bring this dosimeter into the solution set for satellite designers, said David J. Strobel, President of Space Micro.” “We believe this program is an important step in understanding the space environment”.

MicroRad100 incorporates Clemson University patented radiation detector technology based on UVEPROM devices. Space Micro's dosimeter also employs radiation hardening techniques such as demonstrated on the Air Force TacSat 2 program. Combining these technologies into lower cost space qualified standard products will allow the use of radiation monitors for virtually every satellite and space probe.
