Space radiation dosimeter R&D for NASA-Phase 2

Supports vision for space exploration

SAN DIEGO, CA –May 23, 2006 – Space Micro Inc. has been selected for research and development of a new low cost space radiation dosimeter card which will be introduced as a standard product in two years. This effort is being partially supported by NASA under a $600,000 Phase II STTR contract. This work will culminate with the development and commercial availability of an efficient, robust, low power dosimeter in a tiny package which is used to monitor and report the radiation levels in manned space missions. The new dosimeter card is called the Micro RAD 100. This card will be radiation tolerant to both the total ionizing dose and the single event effects in space orbits.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to partner with NASA Ames and Life Sciences to bring this dosimeter into the solution set for long duration manned space missions”, said David J. Strobel, President of Space Micro. “We believe this program will help enable safety of astronauts for President Bush's Moon, Mars and beyond initiative.”

Through a teaming agreement, the dosimeter will incorporate patented radiation detector technology developed by Dr. Peter J. McNulty, a Clemson University Professor and his associates. “The Passive Solid State Dosimeter technology represents a major breakthrough by using the efficiency of silicon devices to replace conventional Geiger Tube type detectors”, said James Winso, Space Micro’s Program Manager for the Phase II STTR program. “Space Micro is uniquely able to apply this technology to effect a quantum improvement in radiation measurement, in space as well as on Earth.” Space Micro's dosimeter will also employ radiation hardening techniques such as demonstrated on the Air Force Roadrunner program. Combining these technologies into lower cost space qualified standard products will allow the use of radiation monitors for virtually every satellite and space probe.
