Space Micro Inc. will follow-on technology development contract. “Gamma Finder” radiation detection technology assists in Homeland Defense SAN DIEGO, CA – April 30, 2007– The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) has awarded a Phase II SBIR Contract to Space Micro Inc. to enhance the ability to find radiological materials that could be a threat to the Nation. The Gamma Finder technology will be realized in a Space Micro product designated RadSITE™ that not only remotely detects and identifies Gamma Sources, but by use of a unique detector configuration and signal processing technique, will simultaneously provide operators with the Azimuth Direction of one or more sources. Mr. James Winso, a Program Manager for Space Micro notes that “RadSITE™ enables security personnel to see where the radiation hazard is coming from”. Commercially fielded radiation detectors do a fine job of identifying Gamma Radiation Fields, but they are not able to determine the direction of the source, a vital need for the radiological assessment missions. Directional Gamma Finding is complicated by the fact that earth’s environment includes considerable naturally occurring and legitimate medical and industrial sources, which an adversary could use to camouflage the danger. By providing a vector to the source, RadSITE™ will enable Military Personnel and First Responders to find the radiation threats and safely track them down. About Space Micro Inc. Founded in 2002 as a satellite technology research and development company, Space Micro Inc. is a leader in taking technologies from the commercial sector and applying these to meet the needs of the Space, Aerospace, Military, and Domestic Security markets. Space Micro is a pioneer in providing radiation-hardened by design solutions for advanced electronic systems and microelectronics, including the development of the world’s fastest small space computers such as the Proton200kTM.
