Temperature-Sensing Material Coating Recognized as a Success.
Air Force recognizes Space Micro Inc. for its Innovation.

SAN DIEGO, CA – April 10, 2008 – Research conducted by Space Micro Inc. has resulted in a paint-like material that can help measure high temperatures on various surfaces. This material can be used for a variety of applications such as thermal mapping of the surface of wind tunnel models over a range of 80F to 1,200F. This material has been extremely durable in this environment allowing it to withstand multiple test runs and lessen the need for reapplication and/or maintenance.

This work was performed as part of an Air Force-sponsored SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) project called “Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP) for Wind Tunnel Models”. The work was performed with Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC), Arnold AFB, TN.

This Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has recognized this project as one of its “SBIR/STTR Innovation Stories”, a distinction that highlights programs that result in technologies with “clearly outstanding potential”.

Carl S. Edwards, Advanced Materials Division Manager commented: “Space Micro is pleased to be recognized by the Air Force for our work in developing this technology. We plan to continue development and provide a superior product to the Air Force. We plan to extend the use and application of this material to aerospace companies in support of development of high speed aircraft.”

“Our approach to meeting Air Force needs is to highly leverage commercial off the shelf materials and materials science and integrate these to provide novel and useful solutions” said David J. Strobel, President and CEO at Space Micro. Phase II of this SBIR project has been completed and further development, supported by a Phase II add-on contract, is anticipated.

Full details of the story can be found by going to www.spacemicro.com, and looking in the Advanced Materials Division section (refer to discussions of Temperature Sensitive Paint or “TSP”). The story is posted at the SBIR/STTR Electronic Library and listed as a “What's New” item on the Shopping Mall home page at http://www.sbirsttrmall.com/Library/SBIRImpactStory.aspx (look for Topic # “AF04-294”).
