Composite
Materials Inspection Technology Developed.
Allows for Non-Destructive Evaluation of
composite surfaces prior to bonding or repair.
SAN DIEGO, CA – April 17, 2008 – Space Micro’s
Advanced Materials Division announced today that it
has completed development of a low cost
Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) technology for the
purpose of inspecting composites prior to repair or
bond. This work has been funded through a Phase I
SBIR award with NAVAIR, Patuxent River, MD. This
patent-pending technology uses full spectrum
reflected light to “fingerprint” contaminants on
composite surfaces and is sensitive enough to detect
contaminants that may affect adhesion. The result is
a useful technique with applications for commercial
as well as military composites. Space Micro is
looking for end-users to support productization of
this technology.
Carl S. Edwards, Manager of the Advanced
Materials Division commented: “Our engineering team
within the division has developed this technology in
response to a military technical challenge and has
produced an effective demonstration, generating
interest within the military as well as commercial
organizations. We plan to finish development of this
technology and provide a superior product for
commercial applications.” More details about this
product and a short video can be found by going to
www.spacemicro.com, and looking in the Advanced
Materials Division section (refer to discussions of Composite Bonding Inspection Techniques).
“Our approach to meeting DoD technical needs is
to leverage commercial off the shelf (COTS)
technologies and integrate them in a novel way with
software algorithms to provide innovative material
solutions” said David J. Strobel, President and CEO
at Space Micro.
