Space Micro, Inc. Awarded Air Force Contract For Advanced Satellite Computer
SAN DIEGO, CA - June 3, 2003 - Space Micro, Inc. today announces the award of a research and development contract for its first advanced satellite computer platform, the Proton100™ radiation hardened single board computer. The Air Force Research Laboratory awarded the Phase II Small Business Innovative Research contract, after successful demonstration of Space Micro"s patent pending radiation hardening technology, Time-Triple Modular Redundancy, or TTMR™.
The Air Force contract calls for further demonstration and radiation testing of the TTMR™ technology. Additionally, development of the Proton100k™ computer board product will be completed, integrating TTMR™ and other radiation mitigation technologies into a standard product. The Proton100k™ is the most advanced satellite computer board product offering, providing 2,400 MIPS uncorrected throughput and 1,440 MIPS at single event upset (SEU) rates of >1E-4 unrecoverable upsets/day. Due to TTMR"s unique advancements in combining low power, high-speed and SEU mitigation, the high-speed performance of the computer is achieved at a low power of 8 watts for the entire computer. Other radiation hardened performance specifications include total dose survivability greater than 100 krad (Si) and no single event latchup. The Proton100k™ performance meets the current radiation hardened industry computer solutions, but far exceeds its competition in throughput and power, where today"s industry standard operates at 250 MIPS and approximately 10 watts for the same computer configuration (memory, communication ports, etc.).
"Satellite systems have been struggling for years to solve the speed, power and SEU tolerance issues with microprocessors. TTMR allows us to build a satellite computer with the most advanced commercial microprocessors, solving the speed-power issues, and adds methods of fault tolerance to correct for SEU problems", said David Czajkowski, COO and Proton100k Program Manager for Space Micro. "We are extremely pleased with the combination of TTMR with and COTS processors, it becomes obvious that the resulting Proton100k computer will provide a system that the marketplace has been seeking."
