San Diego high tech, small business captures three space R&D contracts
(San Diego, CA) Space Micro Inc., founded in 2002, recently was awarded three related contracts to develop dramatically smaller and faster computers for spacecraft. The key technologies deal with mitigation and protection from the harmful radiation found in both earth orbiting satellites and deep space probes. Without special design and new technologies, advanced space microelectronics and computers would fail due to radiation damage to the current generation of commercial microcircuits and semiconductors.
Space Micro Inc. has been selected and awarded key research and development contracts to embed their techniques in a tiny single board computer (SBC), hardened to the space environment. Funding comes from three significant US government agencies: Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA/MSFC), and Missile Defense Agency (MDA). Space Micro Inc. has captured three Phase I SBIR contracts and two Phase II awards.
