Space hardened high data rate error correction IC enables Lasercom Applications in space

SAN DIEGO, CA - October 11, 2004 - Space Micro Inc. has been selected for research and development of a new radiation hardened microelectronics chip to enable high data rate communications in space. This effort is being partially supported by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Rome Laboratory under a Phase I SBIR contract. This work will culminate with the availability of a radiation hardened microelectronics chip, which provides error correction of high data rate communication channels. This device must be radiation tolerant to both the total ionizing dose and the single event effects in space orbits.

"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to partner with AFRL Rome Labs to bring this chip set into the solution set for satellite designers, said David J. Strobel, President of Space Micro. "We believe this program is an important step in space-space, space-airborne, and space-ground low error rate communications"

The ECC chip will incorporate Space Micro"s Hardened by design (HBD) IC design technologies. This new chip will employ unique IC design and layout techniques and be fabricated at a commercial semiconductor foundry. Combining these technologies into space qualified standard products will allow the use of advanced high data rate communication channels in the harsh environment encountered in space.
