Radiation shielding R&D Award to Space Micro

Enables novel lighter composite materials

SAN DIEGO, CA - November 11, 2005 - Space Micro Inc. has been selected by Vanguard Composites for research and development of an innovative radiation shielding concept for incorporation in composite materials. This effort is being partially supported by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) under a Phase II SBIR contract. This work will demonstrate the technical feasibility of adding various combinations of shielding materials into an advanced composite structure. This technique, once qualified, will result in dramatically increased application of composite structures in MDA systems.

"Space Micro is pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Vanguard and MDA to demonstrate this concept and introduce as a solution for advanced missile interceptors, "said Mr. Carl Edwards, Director of Space Micro's Advanced Materials Division". "We believe this program is an important step in enabling weight efficient shielded composites".
