Awarded Air Force Contract
Technology helps to detect
structural faults in aircraft.
SAN DIEGO, CA - March 13, 2007- Space Micro Inc. (SMI) Advanced Materials Division announced today that they have been awarded a Phase I SBIR Contract from the US Air Force, RAFB, for structural defect detection in aging aircrafts. This innovative concept will be crucial for the identification and location of defects in adhesive bonded metal structures for the Department of Defense, and Commercial Aircraft applications. These applications include inspection of workhorse military aircrafts such as the F-15 and Commercial Aircrafts such as the Boeing 737.
Carl Edwards, Manager of Advanced Materials Division commented: "Space Micro has demonstrated that defects in adhesive joints in aircraft structures can be reliably detected by IR Thermography. Towards that end, we are working to develop a full production system in the future"
Our approach to meeting Air Force needs is to highly leverage commercial-off-the-shelf sensor technologies, "said David J. Strobel, President and CEO at Space Micro". Phase I is on track to be completed in early 2007, which will validate the lab feasibility of this concept to identify defects.
