Space Micro Awarded NDE Contract
Technique being developed for Non-Destructive Evaluation of Ship Structures

SAN DIEGO, CA - October 20, 2008 - Space Micro Inc. has been selected for an SBIR Phase II Navy contract with NAVSEA, for NDT (non-destructive testing) approaches for marine aluminum structures. This new technology will help improve the detection of cracks, corrosion, and defects in composite structures.

Detection of defects in marine aluminum structures improves safety, lowers the downtime of sea vessels, and saves time and money For example; corrosion in aluminum can increase the rate of mechanical failure. Therefore, marine aluminum structures need periodic examination to check for cracks and other defects before they become critical in size. NDT offers an automated solution for testing such structures

Mr. Carl Edwards, Director of Space Micro's Advanced Materials Division commented: "Our technique will address the need for systematic, cost effective inspection of naval ships via a non-contact large field-of-view NDE technique."
